The Ekiti State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised the alarm that the Presidency has commenced arrest of its members and some of its leaders as the governorship election scheduled for Saturday, 21st June, 2014, approaches.
According to a statement by the state Director of Media and Publicity of the APC, Segun Dipe, the state Commissioner for Integration and Inyergovernment Affairs, Funminiyi Afuye, has been arrested, whisked away to Abuja and is being prepared for arraignment at the court for treason.
According to Dipe, “the fears of the APC that the Presidency wants to clamp down on its members to put them out of circulation has been confirmed as the Commissioner for Integration and Intergovernmental Affairs, Hon. Funminiyi Afuye who was whisked to Abuja two weeks ago from the scene of APC rally, has been charged for treason.
“Funminiyi Afuye was not caught with any weapon during the rally but joined other party members in the usual ‘feet sweeping’ rally which APC was known for.
“We have raised the alarm on many occasions that the Jonathan Presidency has ordered a clampdown on the leaders, members and sympathisers of the APC so that they will be out of circulation during the election next Saturday.
“Similarly, three APC members from Ikole local government have also been whisked to Abuja with many others listed for arrest and arraignment for terrorism. The APC members whisked to Abuja are: Aanu Onipede, Babatunde Adeosun and Olufemi Ojo.
“Many homes of APC leaders and supporters are being searched in every town with the aim of implicating them for arrest and trial on trumped up charges.
“We appeal to the international community to prevail on President Jonathan not to use his power of incumbency to supress the people of Ekiti State whom he is supposed to protect.
“President Jonathan should realise that he is the President of Nigeria and not of the PDP and should be neutral and fair to all.
“We now know that the gubernatorial candidate of the PDP in Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose meant what he said that, President Jonathan would do anything he asked for. Part of what Ayo Fayose is asking for and which he has been boasting about is that APC leaders and members shall be put out of circulation on election day so that the PDP will have a field day of rigging.
“We also wish to remind President Jonathan that he should focus his attention more on the real terrorists in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States and leave the peace loving people of Ekiti State alone to elect a Governor of their choice.
“Ayo Fayose has been rejected by Ekiti people and no amount of intimidation from the Jonathan Presidency will cow the resolve of the people to vote for the Governor of their choice next Saturday.
“We urge our supporters to be calm and remain steadfast in the face of intimidation and come out en mass to vote for the candidate of their choice on Saturday”.
