A 32 year old married woman, Yusuf Rashidat, has thrown her neighbour’s four years old daughter inside well days after her neighbour converted into her line of business.
Rashidat who resides at Aduragbemi area in Osogbo, Osun state, southwest Nigeria, sells bean-cake popularly called “akara” in the front of her house while her neighbour simply identified as Mrs. Olatunji manages a kiosk beside Rashidat where she trades in provisions.
Trouble was said to have started late April, 2014, when Mrs. Olatunji changed her line of business from provision to “moi-moi”, an edible ware that is an alternative of “akara”. Mrs. Olatuni was said to have been thriving in the sale of her moi-moi, a situation that did not go down well with Rashidat.
It was gathered that Rashidat always picks fight with her neighbour accusing her of snatching her customers. She was said to had warned Mrs. Olatunji against selling “moi-moi” but the later ignored her warning.
Apparently angered at Mrs. Olatunji’s refusal to return to her former business (trading in provision), Rashidat allegedly picked the former’s four years old daughter identified as Mercy Olatunji and threw her inside a deep well.
But fortunately for the little girl, she held unto an iron inside the well before she started crying. A passer-by was said to have heard Mercy’s voice and raised alarm thus attracting residents of the area who drew out Mercy from the well alive.
The girl who sustained injuries on her right hand was said to have narrated her ordeal in the hands of Rashidat thus necessitating her arrest by the police. The suspect was arraigned before an Osogbo Magistrate court on Monday, 5th May, 2014 on a two count-charge bothering on attempted murder.
The police prosecutor, Fagboyinbo Abiodun, an inspector, told the court that the accused committed an offence contrary to Sections 509 and 320(1) of the Criminal Code Cap. 34 Vol. 11 Laws of Osun State, Nigeria 2003.
The charged sheet reads in part “that you, Yusuf Rashidat on the 1st day of May 2014 at about 2:00pm at Aduragbemi area Osogbo in Osogbo Magisterial District did unlawfully attempt to kill one Mercy Olatunji aged 4 by throwing her inside a deep well and thereby committed 320(1) of the criminal code cap. 34 vol. 11 laws of osun state, Nigeria 2003”.
Rashidat entered into a not guilty plea to her charges and her counsel, Mrs Nagode prayed the court to grant her bail arguing that the accused is still presumed innocent until the contrary is proved.
While opposing the defense counsel application for bail, Mr Abiodun told the court to remand the accused due to the nature of the alleged offence.
The presiding Magistrate, Adebayo Lasisi ordered that Rashidat be remanded in Ilesha prison and requested that her counsel should furnish the court with a written bail application. He adjourned the case till 19th May, 2014 for hearing on the formal bail application.
