The Presidency on Tuesday begged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before next week’s presidential elections.
Special adviser to the president on political affairs, Professor Rufai Ahmed Alkali made the appeal when members of about 120 Atiku support groups joined the PDP, Tuesday, in Abuja.
Atiku was a member of PDP on which platform he became the Vice President in 1999 till 2007 but he defected in 2014 to the All Progressives Congress (APC) where he sought the party’s presidential ticket for next week’s presidential election.
The ticket was picked by retired General Muhammadu Buhari.
Alkali said the return of the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to the PDP would boost President Jonathan’s chances and other PDP candidates at securing victory in the elections.
The political adviser noted that the second term for President Jonathan is “a second term for the future of the nation” adding that the groups had left “darkness for light.”
“Atiku is a PDP man to the core. He has gone on vacation but I believe he will return to the big family, the PDP before the elections to ensure our success,” he said.
Alkali who said the PDP is dealing with desperate opposition politicians appealed to party’s members not to join issues with the opposition but remain committed to ensuring that President Jonathan wins the election.
