Jonathan May Name New IGP Today …Abba Favoured For The Post

Baring any last minute change, President Goodluck Jonathan may announce a new Inspector General of Police (IGP) after the Federal Executive Council(FEC) today.

The new IGP will replace the incumbent IGP, Mohammed Dahiru Abubakar, whose tenure expires tomorrow.

M.D Abubakar will complete 35 years in service on Thursday and may bow out after a distinguished career, stretching over the years.

He was appointed the 16th indigenous IGP in January 2012 and took over from Abubakar Ringim.

Inside Presidency sources disclosed to the Nigerian Tribune in Abuja, on Tuesday, that  President Jonathan had kept his choice of a new IGP close to his chest.

The sources revealed that five contestants were screened which included two DIGs and three AIGs.

However, the sources disclosed that after much pressure on the president on whether to shift the position of the IGP to the North or to the South-South, he finally settled down for a North-West candidate.

The source added that the president felt comfortable with AIG zone 7, Suleiman Abba.

Informed sources told the Nigerian Tribune that all was now set to announce the name of the 17th indigenous IGP.

AIG Abba was a one-time Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and had served in various capacities in the Police Force.

He later proceeded to the Nigerian Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies(NIPPS) Kuru, and he is currently the AIG, Zone 7, Abuja.
