The Nigerian Army has disclosed that popular investigative journalist, Fisayo Soyombo is being investigated over oil theft.
This is coming amid reports that Soyombo, is being held by the Army in Port Harcourt.
However, in a statement issued on Friday, 29 November, 2024, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 6 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, said Soyombo was one of those arrested among those involved in oil theft.
He, however, did not disclose whether this was the same as the investigative journalist or name semblance.
Danjuma highlighted the division’s recent successes in tackling illegal oil bunkering in the Niger Delta, explaining that intelligence report had uncovered a gang involved in pipeline vandalism and oil theft.
He stated that troops conducted a targeted operation at an illegal bunkering site, leading to multiple arrests, including that of Fisayo Soyombo, an investigative journalist, who was apprehended at the scene.
“While the Division will not want to join issues with purveyors of falsehood and misinformation, It is important to put the records in proper perspective.
“You would recall that the Division has scaled up its anti-illegal oil bunkering operations with huge operational successes recorded.
“Only recently, intelligence revealed the existence of a notorious gang of oil thieves noted for bursting pipelines and illegal connections for oil theft in the region.
“In a deliberate operation conducted, troops trailed the criminals to an illegal oil bunkering site.
“In a subsequent operation carried out, troops swooped on the site, where arrests were made, including one Fisayo Soyombo who was also arrested at the scene,” he said.
The military noted that the, “suspects are currently undergoing preliminary investigation to ascertain their level of involvement or otherwise.”
It clarified that the recent arrest of Soyombo is linked to the activities of oil thieves operating in the Niger Delta region.
It urged media outlets to verify their information before publishing to ensure accuracy, as it reaffirmed its dedication to curbing oil theft and criminal activities, emphasizing that these efforts aim to boost the nation’s oil and gas production.
“Therefore, his arrest is not unconnected with the activities of these oil thieves in the region.
“It is, therefore, important for media outlets to ensure the veracity of their information before they place them in the public domain.
“The Division will like to reassure the general public of its commitment and responsiveness in ensuring the activities of criminal gangs, particularly oil thieves, are drastically curbed in the region.
“This, it is hoped, will shore up oil and gas production in the country,” he added.

Ogun CJ Sets Free 14 Prisoners
The Chief Judge of Ogun State, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, on Friday, 29 November, 2024 pardoned 14 inmates during a jail delivery exercise held at the Judiciary Complex, Kobape, Abeokuta, the state capital.
The move, aimed at decongesting correctional facilities across the state, saw inmates released on health and compassionate grounds.
However, the CJ declined to pardon two high-profile suspects: a 51-year-old man, Jimoh Muhammed, accused of raping a 14-year-old girl in 2018, and Suru Philip, 40, allegedly involved in the 2019 kidnapping of a traditional ruler in Efire Town, Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.
Justice Dipeolu described the jail delivery exercise as a vital tool for reviewing cases, expediting justice, and reintegrating inmates into society.
She highlighted systemic challenges such as overcrowded facilities and delays in court proceedings, noting that innovative solutions like periodic jail delivery, non-custodial sentences for minor offences, and compensation for crime victims are critical.
She said, “These challenges within our justice system demand urgent attention and creative solutions. “The main essence of this program is to ensure that our system promotes reintegration rather than mere punishment for inmates who have spent prolonged periods in custody without trial.”
The Chief Judge also revealed that during a similar exercise in April 2024, 48 inmates were released from Ilaro, Oba, and Ibara Correctional Centres after thorough case reviews.
Justice Dipeolu urged the pardoned inmates to turn a new leaf and embrace a crime-free life, emphasizing the significance of the opportunity granted to them.
“To those released today, this is a chance for reflection, growth, and new beginnings. Use this second chance to rebuild your lives. It is never too late to seek redemption and make amends,” she said.
The Comptroller of Correctional Centres in Ogun State, Ayodeji Adepoju, commended the Chief Judge for her efforts and appealed to the public to support the reintegration of released inmates.
He also admonished the freed individuals to become responsible citizens and contribute positively to society.

The Head of NIWA’s Media Department, Suleman Makama, who confirmed the sad incident on Friday, 29 November, 2024, stated that the women were travelling to a market in Niger State on a boat when it capsized along the Dambo-Ebuchi section of the River Niger.

Makama further noted that he is awaiting clearance from NIWA management before issuing an official statement providing comprehensive details of the incident.

He reiterated NIWA’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Nigerians using water transportation.
“Ninety-nine per cent of mishaps on the waterways result from human errors”, Oyebanji stated.
He explained that operators often make avoidable mistakes, adding, “Some of these operators rely on drugs, which impair their judgment and lead to fatal errors.”
He also decried the disregard for regulations, stressing that “it’s unacceptable for wooden boats to carry over 150 to 200 passengers, far exceeding their capacity.”

Tinubu, who was represented at the event by Nana Kashim Shettima, wife of the Vice President of Nigeria, said Patience deserved to be celebrated.
“The first time I met her, I can testify the kind of person late Pastor Patience Umo Eno was. She was a woman of courage and faith, a caring woman. Your Excellency, for sure, not only you, we are all going to miss her. Who are we to question God? There is time for everything.
“Our hope and prayers are with you, the family and our dear excellencies, who are the state coordinators for the Renewed Hope Initiative. Truly, she deserves to be celebrated and it gladdens my heart at the colourful way she was celebrated. May God comfort you and the family,” she said.
The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Dr Umo Uno, said the funeral was an opportunity to thank God for the life of his late wife and applauded the support and show of love from all over the nation.
“We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love, starting from the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love by the mother of the nation, distinguished Senator Remi Tinubu who led all the governors’ wives, all of the ministers’ wives to pay us the first condolence visit. Mummy, we thank you, and all the women of this country.
“I want to say that you have shown us love and that love strengthens us. If we stand here today strong, it is because the nation has risen as one to condole us and to give us a shoulder. I thank you,” he stated.
The governor called on all Nigerians to rise in one accord and stop fault finding, but support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu so he could lead the nation to prosperity.
Eno, who said his wife became larger in death than in life, said he would miss her, and promised to continue to live for the legacies she stood for.
“We will work extra hard not to disappoint Akwa Ibomites, and not to disappoint Nigerians. We want to say by the grace of God, we will continue to double our efforts, to push the frontiers of development of our state forward. We will continue to double our efforts in being humble, in maintaining relationships, in living up to the legacies that my wife stood for,” he said.
