Barely 10 days to the inauguration of Lagos 8th Legislative Assembly, a non-governmental group, Change Alliance Leadership, has urged the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state to consider competence and experience in supporting and picking the next Speaker of the House.
Speaking with journalists at the weekend, the Coordinator of the group, Princess Olabanji Folashade-Oba, said that for the on-going transformation in the Lagos State House of Assembly to be sustained, a competent, experienced and charismatic member and current Deputy Chief Whip of the Assembly, Rotimi Abdul Lateef-Abiru, should be given the privilege to succeed the outgoing speaker, Adeyemi Ikuforiji.
She said before now, the Ikorodu division had been agitating for number one position in the state since “we have competent, experienced and charismatic people in the area who have contributed immensely to the development of the state and who are willing to take the state to the next level”.
But she added that since party’s decision is supreme, that was why the people of Ikorodu gave bulk votes to the Governor-elect, Akinwunmi Ambode during the last gubernatorial/House of Assembly elections.
“We strongly believe that for executive/legislative harmony enjoyed by the outgoing governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, to continue during the next dispensation, the current Deputy Chief Whip of the House, Rotimi Abiru, should become the next speaker.
“Our resolution to drum support for Abiru is not only because he is from Ikorodu but because he is competent, experienced, charismatic, cool headed and imbued with organising skills. He is capable of taking the House to the next level since he is actively involved in the ongoing transformation headed by Ikuforiji.
“We are appealing to the leadership of the party and other members of the House both newly elected and reelected members to support Abiru’s candidature because the Lagos State House of Assembly will be better for it.
“The outgoing Speaker, Ikuforiji, has taken the Lagos Assembly to great heights and we need somebody who is very experienced and has ability to coordinate people so as to have good working relationship with the incoming governor since no transformation can take place without executive/legislative harmony. These qualities needed for these are inherent in Abiru,” she said.
Folashade-Oba, reiterated that although she and her group would honour the party’s decision in electing the speaker, she was sure that if Abiru emerges the speaker, there was no doubt that the state would record an aggressive transformation through people oriented laws that would be churned out by the House, which according to her would make the new Governor, Akin Ambode achieve great success within a shortest period of time.
