The conduct of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries for state house of Assembly in Benue State was yesterday marred by late distribution of electoral materials.
The officials of the PDP in the agrarian state could not administer the electoral materials till at about 3pm when the names of electoral officers were made available. State chairman of PDP, Agbo Emmanuel however, assured that the primaries would be conducted without rancour.
The electoral officers for the state assembly constituencies had arrived the PDP state secretariat located along Makurdi-Otukpo road as early as 8am. Many of them who made their way into the premises of the party secretariat were ordered by a PDP official to retire outside the place till proper directive is given.
The supposed electoral officers, party supporters as well as security operatives that came for the exercise were seen seated under trees opposite the secretariat, waiting anxiously while others were unwinding and chatting arguably. There was no cogent explanation from the PDP officials on what might have caused the unnecessary delay.
It was at about 4pm before a party official commenced announcement of names of the electoral officials who were directed to move into the edifice for onward collection of the electoral materials. The distributed materials could not quickly arrive to some distant areas till dusk.
However, sources at the PDP secretariat told LEADERSHIP Sunday that the late distribution of the materials was propelled by an alleged disagreement that ensued between some political stakeholders in both the Tiv and Idoma speaking areas over distribution process.
