Former President Goodluck Jonathan has resolved to back the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate, Senator Diri Douye, in the November 16 Bayelsa governorship poll, a report has said.
“How can I be working for the All Progressives Congress when I am a frontline stakeholder and the father of the Peoples Democratic Party,” the former president reportedly quizzed.
According to ThisDay, Jonathan gave after being persuaded by six governors, with whom he held a meeting at his residence in Abuja over the weekend.
The governors, according to ThisDay, are Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia); Seyi Makinde (Oyo); Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto); Ishaku Darius (Taraba) and Bala Mohammed (Bauchi).
Although a cold war is believed to exist between President Jonathan and Bayelsa Governor Seriake Dickson, the governors made the former know he risked being ridiculed by a PDP loss in the forthcoming poll.
An unnamed governor quoted in the report allegedly said: “We made it clear to him that his name and influence is at stake, and that he should do everything necessary to support Douye.”
The PDP government in Bayelsa has faced a backlash and defection from some aggrieved party faithful over the emergence of Senator Diri Douye.
