Youth and Sports Development Minister, Mr. Sunday Dare has commended the Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu for dissolving the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) following wide spread protests against the Unit over human rights abuses and extra judicial killings.
The IG has been under intense pressure to dissolve the outfit due to outrage over the activities of the outfit particularly with issues bordering on human rights abuses and extra judicial killings.
According to the Minister, “We commend the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Adamu for dissolving SARS in response to the demands of Nigerians. This is a further confirmation of the sensitivity of the police high command by acting in the best interest of the public. I had met with the IG last week to seek for ways of ending the activities of some bad eggs in the Police. I believe this action would calm frayed nerves and also restore public confidence in the Nigerian Poilice Force. The IG has started reforming the Force, I believe he would see it through.”
Dare further said that, “As a measure of utmost good faith, I appeal to all our youths to remain law abiding. Nigerian youths are resilient and hardworking. They must remain law abiding and not allow themselves to be used by any group or individuals to forment trouble”.
The Minister is expected to meet with youth leaders and other civil society groups this week on how to foster better relationship between the Police and the public.
