Slindile Mtolo, 20, is seeking bail in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court after she was charged with trying to murder her two young children by feeding them porridge laced with Rattex on June 16.
She has been charged with attempted murder.
The children started to vomit profusely during the ordeal and she eventually told the neighbour what was happening. She then handed herself over to police, submitting a full confession.
Her eldest son is 2-years-old and the other son is four months.
Mtolo applied for bail, on the premise that she needs to financially support her children. She said in an affidavit on Thursday that she would plead guilty.
Investigating Officer, Warrant Officer Alvin Freddy, said Mttolo had “a change of heart” after poisoning the kids.
He is however, opposing her bail application, saying she still poses a threat to the children.
The children are in the custody of their grandmother who lives near to Mtoli’s residence.
Freddy said police cannot guarantee her safety if she returns home because the community is out for revenge.
The bail application will continue on 1 July.
