Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, an ardent squash freak, proved everyone, including sports medics wrong on how to stay healthy when he scored two goals yesterday in a novelty match put together to mark his 78th birthday.
The game played at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Kuto, Abeokuta, brought out the never-say-die -spirit in the retired army general as he dazzled spectators who thronged the arena to watch Team Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) defeat the Ogun State Governor’s Office team led by state’s chief executive, Senator Ibikunle Amosun 2-1.
A special assistant to the governor on special duties scored the only goal for the government team.
Obasanjo who captained the OOPL team displayed football artistry even though age slowed his reflexes during the course of the match.
He lost four scoring chances that would have increased his tally and perhaps into football record as first 78-year-old to achieve that feat in the round leather game.
The first half of the 60-minute match ended goalless.
But the OOPL team rebound in the second half with players such as Prof. Akin Mabogunje, 88-year-old Dr. Femi Olopade, and an aide of the former president, Vitalis, among others giving the Amosun-led team a tough time.
Mabogunje proved a capable hand at the goal post.
Helping the Amosun’s team on the defensive, were the Secretary to the State Government, Adeoluwa Taiwo, and the governor’s Chief of Staff, Prof. Ganiu Olatunde, among other.
The Five-A-Side match ended with Obasanjo, Amosun and Mabogunje winning golden boots, Most Valuable Player and Golden Gloves respectively.
