The Nigeria Police, Ogun State Command, have arrested a 47-year-old man suspected killer in Ekiti State, Southwest Nigeria.
Abimbola Oyeyemi, a police officer and spokesperson for the Command, said the suspect, James Arowolo, had murdered Annah Fagbohun in Ijoun area of Yewa-North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
Also arrested is another member of the gang, John Fayemi, a native of Ekiti. Both suspects were part of a six-man gang that attempted to kidnap Mariam Fagbohun, the deceased’s 25-year-old daughter.
The police said Mariam had just closed from her provision store when the kidnappers attacked her.
The incident, Oyeyemi said, happened on August 20, 2020.
The victim reportedly raised an alarm during the kidnap attempt, which gave the suspects away. In their bid to beat an escape, the suspects reportedly fired the shot that killed Fagbohun.
“While the people around were trying to chase the abductors with the aim of rescuing her, the kidnappers shot into their midst and the bullet hit the victim’s mother, Annah Fagbohun, and she died on the spot,” Oyeyemin stated.
The suspects purportedly confessed to the police that two neighbours of the Fagbohuns sent them on the money-for-ransom mission.
Items recovered from the suspects are three single-barrelled guns, 12 live cartridges and face masks.
The police declared manhunt for other gang members and stated that the arrested persons would face the court.
