Omisore, Akinbade Chicken Out Of Public Debate With Aregbesola; American Institute Organises ‘Manifesto Night’

What was expected to be a robust debate organised for the governorship candidates in the August 9 election in Osun almost turned to be a monologue as the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP), Senator Iyiola Omisore and Engr. Fatai Akinbade respectively failed to show up for the event.

International Republican Institute (IRI), organisers of the debate on the Osun State Broadcasting Corporation (OSBC) had invited the candidates for what it called ‘Manisfesto Hour’ for which they had earlier confirmed their attendance.

However, the organisers were surprised to see only the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gov Rauf Aregbesola and that of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), Mr. Ibrahim Adeoti.

Also conspicuously missing at the debate was the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Elder Segun Akinwusi.

The opposition candidates’ failure to appear for the debate had compelled many listeners to the one hour programme to conclude that they were afraid of facing the incumbent Aregbesola.

During the programme, Aregbesola had told the listeners that his government had executed projects far more than what the resources of Osun could afford.

Aregbesola said those talking of capital flight were ignorant of the workings of governance that they failed to realise that while only N320 billion had been realised as resources, about N380 billion had so far been spent on various projects.
