By Timothy Agbor, Osogbo

The flagbearer of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State, southwest Nigeria in the August 9 governorship election, Senator Iyiola Omisore on Tuesday, 18th June, 2014 escaped an alleged assassination attempt on his life.

The suspected hired assassins were said to have gained entrance into the private residence of Senator Omisore located at 11 Thompson Avenue, Ikoyi Lagos State at the wee hours of Wednesday, 18th June, 2014.

The Media and Publicity Secretary of the Omisore Campaign Organisation, Diran Odeyemi, who disclosed this on Wednesday, 18th June, 2014 while briefing journalists at the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel in Osogbo the state capital, said: “Omisore was supposed to have travelled to Lagos on Tuesday but because of his on-going ward to ward campaign slated for Ifedayo local government area of the state he was convinced by some party chieftains to suspend the Lagos trip”.

According to Odeyemi “all the security personnels attached to Omisore’s house in Lagos were tied with ropes before the assailants finally gained entrance into the house shooting sporadically while shouting “where is Omisore?”.

His words: “all the while we were doing the ward to ward campaign, we never knew God was using this to save Omisore’s life. We left Ifedayo around 1am, and around 2am, the cook of Omisore called and said some people besieged the house, overpowered them and tied them down and started cutting the security gadgets in the house.

“They (suspected assassins) gained access to the house and started shouting ‘where is Omisore? bring him out else we kill all of you’. They searched everywhere in the house and even the boys quarters and they couldn’t find him.

Odeyemi revealed that one of the security guards in the building who managed to escape called the police on phone.

“By the time the police arrived the scene of the incident, some of the hoodlums have escaped while one was shot and later arrested immediately”, Odeyemi stated.

Meanwhile, Odeyemi said Police in Lagos State have commenced investigation into the incident. He therefore called on security agencies to be alive to their duties and thanked God for sparing the life of Omisore.
