The race for who becomes the next Oniru of Iru Land after the demise of His Royal Highness Idowu Abiodun Oniru has continued to generate high interest among not a few Lagosians.
The reason for this, The Gazelle News.com can revealed, is that the Oniru stool is not only one of the most coveted in the state, it is also a first class stool which domain is important to the socio-economic growth of the state.
Suffice to add that because of its location and treasure therein, the Oniru stool is one of the most sought after traditional stool in the state. Apart from its traditional allure, the socio-economic importance cannot be over emphasised.
The Gazelle News.com’s investigation revealed that since the demise of Oba Idowu Abiodun Oniru in 2019, the race for who become the next Oniru has been intense and interesting.
At the end of the day, the race was narrowed down to two very capable personalities: former Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development in Lagos State, Aremo Olusegun Oniru; and current Chief Security Officer to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Hakeem Ajasa.
The Gazelle News.com can confirm that the two are gentlemen deserving of the stool. Of course they are both not only capable but also qualified. However one is more qualified than the other, the basis of this new analysis by The Gazelle News.com.
The basis of this analysis is to unveil the most likely occupier of the revered stool going by available facts and figures.
Traditionally, the two gladiators are princes from approved and legitimate ruling houses in Iru land. While Segun Oniru is from Akinogun Ruling House, Ajasa is from Abisogun Ruling House. That was where the comparison ended.
The last two occupiers of the stool have been from the Akinogun Ruling House. Yesufu Abiodun, grandfather of Segun, from Akinogun Ruling House was installed in 1934 and he ruled for 50 years after joining his ancestors in 1984.
Segun’s father, Abiodun Idowu Oniru ascended the throne in 1985 and died last year. Now, Segun, direct descendant of the last two occupiers of the stool want to replace his father, which The Gazelle News.com can reveal is not in his favour.
Thus, tradition and history is not in favour of Aremo Segun Oniru.
Apart from this, Ajasa seemed to have got more acceptability from major traditional rules in the state particularly the permanent Chairman of the State Council of Obas and Chiefs, the highly revered Eleko of Eko, His Imperial Majesty Rilwan Osuolale Akiolu.
Akiolu is not alone, the Elegushi of Ikateland, His Royal Highness Saheed Elegushi; and the Ojomu of Ajiranland, His Royal Highness Tijani Akinloye. So, while the traditional institution supports Ajasa, the traditional rulers are also in his support.
Political influence is gaining momentum in the final choice of traditional rulers not only in Lagos but in the length and breadth of Nigeria.
Powerful politiians are getting more involved in the choice of traditional rulers and this particular one is not different. The stool is revered and the powerful people are involved and highly interested.
The Gazelle News.com can report that on the balance of scale, Ajasa has the edge. Of course he has the support of his boss, RT. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila and the political structure of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is solidly behind him. Hence one does not need the wisdom of Solomon to know where the Jagaban is.
The Gazelle News.com can also revealed that the Aremo is not popular with ordinary citizens of the Iru kingdom.
Investigations in Iruland indicated that ordinary citizens of the community are not favourably disposed towards Segun Oniru becoming the next Oniru. Some cited alleged arrogance while some accused him of being high handed.
There are equally some residents who believe that the Akinogun family should allow Prince from another ruling house to have a taste of the stool. “They have been ruling for the past 84 years. They should allow another ruling house to occupy the stool,” a resident told this medium on Saturday, 11 January, 2020.
For those rooting for Aremo Segun Oniru, they pointed at the tremendous development the kingdom has enjoyed under the kingship of the Akinogun Ruling House.
They also pointed at the fact that it was under the Akinogun Ruling House that Oniru became a first class tarditonal stool in the state and it was under the ruling house that Iru kingdom was turned into haven of development and growth which had enriched the kingdom.
However despite these, Ajasa enjoys unanimous support and backing of the traditional institutions, traditional rulers, the politicians and the people.
