Men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS of the Osun state Police Command have smashed a notorious armed robbery gang in the state killing its leader.
The armed robbery gang had been terrorising motorists and passengers; dispossessing them of their cash and valuables along Ife/Akure Expressway for a long time; a situation which has subjected the road users and residents of the area to a state of fear.
The men of the underworld met their waterloo in the early hours of Monday, 16th March, 2015 when they were about launching their usual attack on travellers plying the road.
It was learnt that, the police command had on Sunday, 15th March, 2015 got a tip off from a resident of the area whose house is close to the hide out of the armed robbery gang informing the police about the gang’s plan to carry out a robbery attack the following day (Monday).
Consequently, the SARS team was said to have promptly mobilised to Ife/Akure road on Sunday, 15th March, 2015 to forestall the anticipated operation.
Investigation revealed that men of the SARS attacked the armed robbers numbering three and arrested them as soon as they attempted to mount road block on the road with the intent of robbing innocent motorists and passengers.
The leader of the police team that smashed the gang, Omoyele Adekunle ,DSP, confirmed the arrest of members of the gang adding that the gang members also disclosed the address of its leader, simply identified as Abbey.
According to him, upon useful tips on the whereabout of Abbey, which was provided by the suspects, SARS team had stormed Abbey’s house in Modakeke as early as 5.30 am on Tuesday, 17th March, 2015 to arrest him, but Abbey, popularly called ‘Iku’ engaged the team in a gun duel before he was shot dead.
DSP Adekunle gave the names of the three suspects as: Dayo Adebanpe, 28, a motor mechanic from Ile-Ife; Kunle Adepoju, 23, an Okada operator also from Ile-Ife; and Mathias Aleke, 27, also an Okada operator from Modakeke.
According to DSP Adekunle, the suspects had confessed during interrogation that Abbey was the leader of their gang.
The gang was said to have carried out a robbery attack on a bank in Modakeke late last year where no fewer than six people were killed.
