Police in Anambra State have arrested a couple who specialises in snatching newborn babies from their mothers in various hospitals and maternity homes in the state.
Anambra State Police Commissioner, Mr Hassan Karma, who made the disclosure while briefing newsmen in Awka on Wednesday, said that the breakthrough was a result of intensive police investigation, following recorded incidents of child snatching from mothers soon after delivery.
He said through investigations, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the command arrested Friday Chibueze and Amauche Chibueze (husband and wife), who specialised in snatching newborn babies in hospitals and maternity homes in the state.
The Police Commissioner said that the couple sneaked into hospitals and maternity homes in the state, under the guise of sharing the joy of safe delivery with unsuspecting mothers, and thereafter invited members of their gang who immediately stormed the scene with guns and, then forcefully snatch the babies from their mothers.
He said that on interrogation, the couple who confessed to the crime, said that they had so far snatched 10 children, and even mentioned nurses like Ogechi Okoye, Ebubechukwu Okpalu and Ebelechukwu Okala as their accomplice, and Reigns Hospital Igboukwu, Health Care Centre Nnobi and Specialist Hospital Uga all in Anambra State, where they operated.
Mr Karma said the suspects were helping the police for possible arrests of other suspects,and where the snatched babies were kept, or the people they sold them to.
