By Timothy Agbor, Osogbo

The Vice-Chancellor of the Redeemer University, Ede, Osun State, southwest Nigeria, Professor Debo Adeyewa has decried the Federal Government’s refusal to fund private universities despite that the parents of the students pay tax.

To this end, the don urged the Federal Government to include private universities in the disbursement of grants for research and other academic projects.
Professor Adeyewa made this known on Tuesday, 6th January, 2015 in Ede at a press briefing to herald the 6th Convocation of the university tagged “Class of Glory.”

While expressing his displeasure to the exclusion of private universities in the funding of education in Nigeria, the Vice Chancellor said there should be no difference in the funding of research and academic projects for universities.

According to Adeyewa, there was no justification for the exclusion of the private universities from the various government’s grants, appealing to the Federal Government to consider the private universities in the disbursement of grants and funds.

His words: “Private universities are being sidelined by the federal government in the disbursement of grants and funding of university
education.

“As a private university, the Federal Government does not release grant to us for research or any academic programmes. We are being sidelined in the funding of university education by the federal government and it is unfair.

“It is unfair to exclude the private universities in the funding of research and other things which are essential to the development of university education.

“Research has no barrier. There is no religious, background, ethical or status barriers in research. But Nigerian government does not recognise that fact. There should be no difference in the funding of research and academic projects for universities.
“The TETFUND is available but the private universities would not be given. What they do say is that it is not good to fund private university research. That should not be happening in a country where the parents of our students pay taxes.
“We are appealing to the federal government and the NUC to consider giving grant to the private universities.”
