This is a question on the lips of many people as the war between Russia and Ukraine gets fiercer.
A few hours after Vladimir Putin, President of Russia ordered an invasion into Ukraine, everyone started to become frightened and could not help but wonder “Will this mark the beginning of the Third World War?
The battle that has now morphed into violent blows of bombs and attacks only started with threats and critical warnings from both countries. But currently, this fight between the two big nations (Russia and Ukraine) has left a lot of bloodshed in its wake.
On Thursday, 24 February 2022, Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine made a video-address from his bunker addressing the people of his nation. He said that he got information about some special forces from Russia trying to hunt him and his family down.
The Ukrainian President also praised his citizens for their resilience and encouraged them to stay strong before pleading with the West again, telling them not to leave Ukraine to fend for itself during this invasion from Russia.
Zelensky has clearly stated that he is the first target for the Russian soldiers. Some Chenchen special forces called ‘hunters’ have reportedly been given a list of names of Ukrainian officials to kill or detain.
The Ukrainian president has assured the nation that he is still in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, and he has not left because he will be staying with his people.
In his words on Thursday the 24th of February, 2022, he said:
“I know that a lot of misinformation and rumors are being spread now. In particular, it is claimed that I have left Kyiv. I remain in the capital. I am staying with my people.
My family is not a traitor, but a citizen of Ukraine. According to our information, the enemy marked me as the number one target. My family is the number two goal.
They want to destroy Ukraine politically by destroying the Head of State.”
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson has condemned the actions of the Russian President, Putin, and branded him a ‘dictator’. Boris further stated that this invasion is a catastrophe for the continent of Europe.
Joe Biden, President of the United States, recently announced sanctions against Russian banks, exports and military organizations. Biden has also cut off Russia’s biggest bank, Sberbank, from the US financial system to show US’ solidarity with Ukraine.
Nations all over the world are showing the side they support between the two feuding countries through their actions in public and behind closed doors.
So as to the question about the world war, it depends largely on how long Putin remains in power and the person that ends up taking his position as the president of Russia. But for now, we’re not in the third world war.
The prayer on the lips of the masses is that this feud between the two great nations, Russia and Ukraine, should not escalate further.
We can only hope that the families of those who have lost their lives due to this war will be comforted and compensated.
