Deborah said: “It is so sad that my friend (rukayat) just paid her school fees last week and her father got the money from a cooperative society where he used his motorcycle (okada) as a collateral.
“We had a test that morning and that was the reason she was rushing to school from Ikirun. She had to take a bike to get to school faster but this only resulted in her death.”
Another classmate of the deceased described her as a very kind, gentle and easy going lady. “She was also very brilliant and may her soul rest in peace,” she prayed.
It was further learnt that the deceased was the eldest of her parents’ children.
When our correspondent visited Rukayat’s home in Iree, it was a devastating period for her parents and relatives. Her mother, a petty trader could not be consoled.
It was gathered that Rukayat’s mother fainted when the remains of her daughter was brought home for burial.
The deceased father was also shedding bitter tears.
During the quick Islamic funeral for the deceased before her remains ws interred, the Amir (President) of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria in the state polytechnic, Mallam Adegbite AbdulRaham prayed for the repose of the soul of Rukayat.
He urged mourners, most of whom were students to take solace in the fact that Rukayat died while seeking knowledge stressing that she died a martyr.
According to the cleric, “dying while seeking knowledge is itself a martyrdom just as an accidental death of this nature also earns a believer the status of a martyr. Hence, our dear sister died earning two status of martyrdom at the same time. This is indeed great. We love Rukayat, but Allah loves her the more.”
