Giving timely and accurate information on the programmes and policies of Sanwo-Olu to the grassroots is sacrosanct, says COMPASS President.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, Mr Gboyega Akosile on Friday received the executive members of Community Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria (COMPASS), in a courtesy visit.
The President of the Association, ‘Tayo Aderinola, while making his remark, revealed that the essence of the visit is to fraternize with the right source from where the association will be able to contribute immensely to the Administration of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, where and when necessary.
Aderinola further revealed that COMPASS is aimed at bridging the information link between the people in the grassroots and government by providing timely and accurate information on the programmes and policies of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Administration.
“COMPASS is primarily concerned with the development of the practice and system of disseminating local or community news. We also act as a news agency that shares information relevant to all communities in Nigeria”
“We are here in official capacity to give our supports to the administration of Babajide Sanwo-Olu by creating cordial relationship with the hope that he will reciprocate with good gesture. Giving timely and accurate information on the programmes and policies of Governor Sanwo-Olu to the grassroots is sacrosanct”.
“Advertisement patronage and supporting seminars/workshops for community media practitioners will promote our working relationship and will no doubt be beneficial to both parties, as this will bring about good service delivery from government to the people and the feedback from the people to government thereby we stand as the intermediary between government and the grassroots”.
In his response, Akosile thanked the Executive of COMPASS for the visit, and applauded the roles the of Community Media in the society. He assured of a cordial relationship to make community media one of his top priorities, so as to ensure information about the working and functions of government gets to the people at the grassroots.
“Working with COMPASS is a strategic way of reaching the people at the grassroots, if I truly want them to know what governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is doing. Until we go into community journalism, we’ll not communicate with the grassroots adequately and fortunately, you have online presence and offline platforms with a focused specifically on grassroots,” he said.
He likened Community media to Community Policing, saying any government of a state or country that fails to align with them is not serious about involving the people in government policies.
“Community media is very important as far as this government is concerned” Akosile added.
As a mark of honor to congratulate the media icon on his new appointment, a congratulatory card was presented to him while he expressed his gratitude to COMPASS Executive for the good gesture.
The courtesy team which was led by Tayo Aderinola (President) have Tony Okpe (Vice-President): Sheriff Owolabi Bada (Secretary-General); Shakiru Seidu, (Publicity Director); Kayode Odujirin (Auditor).
