Tension Mounts As Battle For Ooni’s Stool Begins; It is Our Turn, Says Giesi Ruling House

In less than two weeks after the remains of the late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuade was committed to mother earth, the battle for the revered vacant throne of Ooni has commenced.

Tongues have been wagging on would succeed the late 85-year-old first class monarch who died in a London hospital on July, 28.

One of the four ruling houses that are entitled to produce a successor to the stool, Giesi Ruling House Moore, Ile-Ife on Monday, 24th August, 2015 declared that it is the next to produce Ooni.

The royal family during a press conference held on in Osogbo at the Nigeria Union of Journalists press center claimed that an official record affirms that the Giesi should produce the next Ooni after late Oba Sijuade, who is from Ogboru ruling House joins his ancestors.

The spokespersons of Giesi ruling house, Prince Adelowo Ogunleye and Prince Ropo Ogunwusi said: “we call this press conference to inform the public especially the people of Ile-Ife and the state government that according to the normal rotation on the succession to the throne of Ooni, it is now the turn of Giesi to produce the next Ooni of Ife.

“It‎ is on record as indicated by the government declaration titled: “The Ooni of Ife Chieftancy Declaration” and its reference number is CB141/7/1/540; it is dated 22nd August, 1977 and addressed to the then Executive Secretary of Oranmiyan Local Government, Ile-Ife from the Office of Military Governor of Oyo state and it was duly signed.”.

According to them, Paragraph A in the letter states that ‘the order of rotation among the ruling houses should be as follows: Osinkola, Ogboru, Giesi and Lafogido.

They declared further stated that another memorandum released by the executive council of Oyo state of Nigeria with reference number-OYSGM (80) 107 dated 16th September, 1980 and titled:’Appointment of a new Ooni of Ife” supports their claim. ‎

They emphasised that Osinkola house produced Oba Adesoji Aderemi,wh‎o ruled for 50yrs and was immediately succeeded by Oba Okunade Sijuwade from Ogboru house who just passed away.

Accordingly, the next ruling house to produce the next Ooni of Ife should be automatically come from Giesi ruling house as approved by the then governments.

The Giesis said they have designed a form for who so ever that is interested, and to authenticate the real heir to the throne.

They assured the royal family”s readiness to produce competent candidates that would be presented to the kingmakers for necessary actions before the chosen candidate mounts the throne of his fore fathers.
