There is palpable fear on the campus of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife following a coordinated attack by some cultists who unleashed terror on some students over alleged money offered to some leaders of the students’ union by President Goodluck Jonathan.

President Jonathan was on campus on Friday, 28th November, 2014 where he was endorsed by some traditional rulers and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) political leaders in the southwest.

The attack carried out at the school main gate on the night of Sunday, 30th November, 2014 was allegedly perpetrated by “Jew fraternity”, a group of cultists based outside the campus.

The students attacked are: Sanyaolu Oluwajuwon (Com. Juwon), Microbiology Part 4; Ibirogba Samuel Electrical Electronics, Part 5; Olubanji Oluwole, (Engel), Philosophy Part 4; and David, a Part 5 student of EDM.

It was gathered that trouble started when Oluwole interrogated one Mohomodu Daniel, former Secretary General of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), also a student of the university on the alleged undisclosed amount of money given to some leaders of the institution by President Jonathan who were on the campus Friday, 28th November, 2014 when he visited.

Oluwole, a member of Education Right Campaign of the institution had just finished attending the group’s meeting held at the Students’ Union building around 5pm before quizzing Daniel on the alleged sum.

Not pleased with Daniel’s explanation, it was gathered that Oluwole slapped Daniel, a situation that resulted to physical combat between the duo’s supporters.

Investigation revealed that Daniel later employed the service of some suspected cultists who re-launched attack on Oluwole and some members of his group around 9pm at the school gate.

Oluwole and his group sustained varying degrees of injuries and were admitted at the school’s health centre before they were discharged. But one of the victims, David suffered severe injury on his head and was rushed to Seventh Day Adventist’ Hospital in Ife for treatment.

But the students were able to apprehend two of the suspected attackers who were brought to the Awolowo Hall Cafe of the campus for interrogation.

The suspected cultists said they were not students of OAU but belonged to a fraternity called “Jew”. Consequently, the suspected cultists were tied with rope and beaten black and blue by some irate students.

Meanwhile, the students later on Sunday night held a congress on Awolowo Hall where they accused the present leadership of the students’ union of ochestrating the attack against the victims who were said to be critics of the President Isaac Ibikunle led Students’ Union government.

But when the Public Relations Officer of the Students’ Union, Bamidele was called on telephone for reaction, he denied that the students’ union had a hand in the attack and also debunked collecting money from President Jonathan.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ayobami Salami was said to had visited David where he was lying critically injured at the Seventh Day Hospital. It was said that David would be transferred to UCH, Ibadan for a comprehensive treatment.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju confirmed the incident but said he was not aware of any money allegedly given to students by President Jonathan.
