L-R: Senator Babafemi Ojudu (Ekiti Central); Chairman, e-eleven, Mr. Femi Ajiniran; and Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, when Fayemi was hosted and presented an award by members of the e-eleven ambassadors, ahead of the forthcoming election, in Ado-Ekiti
We are taken aback by the continued detention of the people arrested by the Police on Sunday 8th June, 2014 following a rally by the All Progressives Congress in Ado-Ekiti. We consider the arrest, transfer and what has become a detention of Honourable Niyi Afuye and others a slap on the face of Ekiti people. We hereby call on the Inspector General of Police to immediately release all these people whose only offence is the exercise of their democratic rights.
A demon gone crazy in the person of OC Mopol, George Selenkere was unleashed on APC members in Ekiti on Sunday. The attack with impunity on the Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi is an intolerable insolence and affront against Ekiti as an entity while the unprovoked police assault on members of his party is another attack on democracy by one of the institutions that is expected to protect it. Most regrettable is the loss of an innocent life in the process and we commiserate with the family.
We hereby call on the Inspector General of Police to effect the immediate release of all those arrested in order to calm frail nerves and ensure normalcy begin to return to Ekiti State. With the election so close at hand, we expect that the security agencies will not do anything that will further aggravate the already tensed situation in the state.
We are also calling for the immediate redeployment prelude to immediate dishonourable discharge from the Nigeria Police the OC Mopol George Selenkere for his singular audacity and affront on democracy. Interestingly we note he is related to the President and therefore was ostensibly carrying out a presidential mission with unusual zeal and silly overzealousness. If the Police Force is to truly live up to its responsibility, it must be without the likes of George Selenkere.
Finally we are alarmed and apprehensive as we reflect on the possibility of the Sunday show being part of the grand plot by leading elements within the Peoples Democratic Party to unleash mayhem in the State as we approach the election. We are informed of a grand design of violence and terror to prevent the election from holding and if that fails, to engage in “Disrupt and Destroy” to prevent the votes from counting. This must not be allowed to succeed as it portends very grave danger for the State and indeed for Nigeria. Boko Haram insurgency that has now become full-blown terror grew out of this sort of ill advised electoral strategy. Ekitis will not allow evil to be planted in their land. The situation calls for caution and vigilance.
