The Chairman of Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, Hon. Jide Jimoh, has blamed construction professionals for most cases of building collapse in the country.
He disclosed this over the weekend in his office when Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG) comprising of building professionals visited the council.
According to him, “the building professionals should be blamed for incessant collapse because most of the professionals patronize quack for building constructions.
“Building experts are the cause of building collapses because they employ incompetent artisans, conduct weak supervision of workmen on site and they also use low quality building materials.
“As cases of building collapse increase, if the professionals are not proactive, we would still be experiencing the same problem.
“As a government, we must put sincerity to what we are doing. We set up fire service station with truck and personnels to minimise loss of lives and property during fire outbreaks of which we’ve been recording successes since its establishment and we make use of professionals in any construction contract we want to award with thorough supervision,” he said.
He urged the building and construction professionals to always adhere to the construction codes to minimise incidences of building collapse.
In his words, the coordinator, the Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG) Yaba chapter, Engr. Friday Chukwu, said they visited the chairman to inform him of the building collapse awareness programme.
“From our findings with the high rate of building collapse in the country,we are going to create awareness through the nooks and crannies of Yaba to let residents know the disadvantage of using substandard building materials and the use of professionals in building construction,” he said.
