Tragedy occurred on Friday, 20 December, 2024 as 35-year-old man, identified as Tunji Jimoh, has reportedly died under questionable circumstances in police detention in Ilorin, Kwara State capital

Tunji, who hails from the Erubu/Asunnara community of Balogun Fulani in Ilorin, Kwara State capital, allegedly died in detention at the state police command headquarters on Friday, 20 December, 2024.

Reports has it that Tunji owed a friend, whose brother is a police officer, a sum of N220, 000, over which he was arrested by a team of police officers, including the creditor’s brother.

After his arrest, Tunji was taken to the Special Investigation Bureau (SIB) at the command headquarters in Ilorin on Friday, 20 December, 2024.

“He was refused bail, and his parents had to leave the station very late on Friday, only for them to be called on Saturday morning to be informed that he had died in detention,” the report alleged

Tunji was allegedly tortured to death in detention due to an existing deal between him and the yet-to-be-identified man he owed.

In a reaction on Sunday, 22 December, 2024, the state police command Public Relations Officer confirmed the  sad incident in a statement issued  by its spokesperson, DSP Ejire Adeyemi Toun.

“The state police command is aware of an unfortunate incident that led to the tragic death of one Mr. Jimoh Abdulquadri, which occurred on December 20, 2024.

“The deceased was invited on an alleged case of obtaining money by false pretense to the tune of N220,000.

“Discreet investigation into the incident has commenced to ascertain the cause, and further developments on the outcome will be communicated as it progresses, as no stone will be left unturned,” the statement vowed.
