The Federal Government has declared Thursday, 19 March, and Friday, 20 March, 2026, as public holidays to mark the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr, which signifies the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who said the holidays were approved to enable Muslim faithful across the country to celebrate the festival, while also encouraging Nigerians to use the period for prayers for peace, unity and national prosperity.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims on the successful completion of the Ramadan fast, urging them to sustain the virtues of discipline, sacrifice and compassion learned during the period.
He said, “I extend warm greetings and congratulations to Muslims across the country for completing the holy month of Ramadan. I urge the Muslim faithful to uphold the values of love, generosity, peace, tolerance and sacrifice learned during the fasting period.”
The Minister further called on all Nigerians, irrespective of religious affiliation, to use the festive period to pray for the stability and progress of the nation, stressing that national unity remains essential for development.
According to him, citizens should celebrate in moderation and remember the less privileged in society, in line with the teachings associated with Eid-ul-Fitr.
He stated, “I encourage all Nigerians to use the festive period to pray for the peace, unity and prosperity of the country, and to celebrate responsibly while extending kindness and support to the less privileged.”
Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening peaceful coexistence among Nigerians, noting that religious celebrations should serve as an opportunity to promote harmony and mutual respect across communities.
He added that the government would continue to support initiatives that foster national integration and social stability, while wishing Muslims a joyful and peaceful Eid-ul-Fitr celebration.
