The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) has announced plans to unveil the National Guidelines for Public Procurement of Food and Related Services, a landmark policy framework aimed at standardising food procurement across public institutions, promoting healthy nutrition and driving sustainable growth in Nigeria’s agricultural value chain.

The guidelines will be officially launched on Monday, 13 July, 2026 at the NAF Conference Centre, Abuja, beginning at 10 a.m.
The initiative, which forms part of the Federal Government’s ongoing procurement reforms, is being implemented by the BPP in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Federal Ministry of Education and other key stakeholders.
The Bureau said the new framework would establish transparent, healthy and sustainable standards for the procurement of food and related services across public institutions, while deploying procurement best practices to strengthen Nigeria’s economy and promote what it described as “a culture of national wellness through the food value chain.”
According to the agency, the guidelines will provide a uniform framework for food procurement in school feeding programmes, hospitals, government ministries, departments and agencies, correctional facilities and the hospitality sector.
The BPP added that the policy is expected to stimulate the strategic growth of Nigeria’s agricultural sector by prioritising local farmers and indigenous food producers, describing the initiative as “a vital step forward in securing our nation’s food future through an inclusive, community-based procurement value chain.”
Beyond improving transparency and accountability in public procurement, the Bureau said the framework would strengthen food security, encourage healthier food systems and create greater economic opportunities across the agricultural value chain.
Activities lined up for the launch include a keynote address and a comprehensive presentation of the guidelines, during which participants will be taken through the new procurement standards and compliance metrics.
Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Bureau of Public Procurement, Dr. Adebowale A. Adedokun, said the initiative reflects the agency’s commitment to procurement reforms that support national development, strengtheng institutions and improve public service delivery.
The Bureau noted that attendance at the launch is strictly by invitation.
The unveiling of the National Guidelines for Public Procurement of Food and Related Services marks another milestone in the Federal Government’s efforts to leverage public procurement as a tool for strengthening food security, supporting local agriculture, improving public health and advancing sustainable economic development.
