The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for greater attention to adult education in Nigeria, insisting that no Nigerian should be denied the opportunity to learn because of age or circumstance.
Tinubu made the call via official X handle of the Office of the First Lady, @statehouse_Fl.in a statement issued to mark the 60th anniversary of International Literacy Day 2026, commemorated globally on Tuesday, 8 September, 2026, under the theme “Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity.”
In the statement, Tinubu described literacy as fundamental to personal empowerment and national development, stressing that Nigeria needed to prioritise adult education.
She explained that when adults can read, write and acquire basic digital and financial skills, they become better equipped to improve their livelihoods, grow their businesses, make informed decisions and support their children’s education.
“In Nigeria, there is a need to give more attention to adult education. When adults can read, write and acquire basic digital and financial skills, they are better equipped to improve their livelihoods, grow their businesses, make informed decisions, and support their children’s education,” she said.
The First Lady described the milestone as another opportunity to renew commitment towards ensuring inclusive access to learning for all Nigerians.
“This important milestone provides another opportunity to renew our commitment to ensuring that no Nigerian is denied the opportunity to learn because of age or circumstance,” she said.
She called for collective effort in building a more literate, productive and prosperous nation, rounding off the statement with felicitations to Nigerians on the global observance.
“Let us work together to build a more literate, productive, and prosperous nation. Happy International Literacy Day 2026,” she said.
