President Bola Tinubu has disclosed that state governors have agreed on measurable reductions in transportation costs for Nigerians beginning October 2026, under the National Affordable Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Transit Programme.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Saturday, 19 September, 2026.
According to the statement, the President had, on August 27, met with governors of the country’s 36 states, where a clear objective was agreed upon to ensure that more Nigerians begin to experience reduced transportation costs from October 1.
“On August 27, I met with the governors of our 36 states, and we agreed on a clear objective. From October 1, more Nigerians should begin to see measurable reductions in transportation costs,” the statement read.
Following the resolution, Tinubu disclosed that an implementation committee for the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme had been established under the auspices of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, chaired by the Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
“We subsequently established an implementation committee for the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme under the auspices of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, chaired by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq,” the statement read.
The President disclosed that the committee, working alongside the Presidential CNG Initiative (PI-CNG) and Electric Vehicle programme, state governments and other critical stakeholders, had already commenced considerable work to identify priority transport corridors, determine appropriate interventions and put the necessary arrangements in place.
“I am aware of the considerable work already underway by the committee, PI-CNG and EV, the States, and other critical stakeholders to identify priority transport corridors, determine appropriate interventions, and put the necessary arrangements in place,” the statement read.
Tinubu stressed that the initiative had become even more urgent amid the ongoing global energy crisis.
“This work has become even more urgent amid the current global energy crisis,” the statement added.
