Lagos is a land of aquatic splendour, a gateway to Nigeria, an investors’ first choice, a melting pot of rich cultural heritage and the undisputed economic nerve centre of the country. It is a state whose identity is defined by enterprise, resilience, ambition and an extraordinary capacity for reinvention. From its strategic coastal advantage to its vibrant commercial landscape, Lagos occupies a place of distinction in Nigeria and across the African continent.

But beyond its natural endowments and economic advantages, there is another compelling reason Lagos stands out: its remarkable leadership trajectory and the continuity of purposeful governance that have consistently shaped its development. And now, the Hamzat years beckon!

Why is Lagos so blessed? Perhaps the answer lies in the rare combination of visionary leadership, institutional continuity, an enterprising population and a political culture that recognises development as a relay race rather than a solitary sprint.

From the foundational reforms and transformational initiatives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State, through the administrations of subsequent governors, Lagos has continued to evolve, expand and redefine the possibilities of subnational governance. Each administration has inherited an evolving development agenda, introduced its own priorities and contributed to the larger Lagos story.

The emergence of Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat as the next gubernatorial flag bearer of our great party presents another opportunity to sustain this legacy and chart a new course for the future. His recently unveiled manifesto, aptly titled “The Lagos Promise,” is therefore more than a campaign document. It is an articulation of expectations, aspirations and proposed interventions for a state that refuses to stand still.

What makes this proposition particularly interesting is the personality and experience behind it. Dr. Hamzat is not approaching the business of governing Lagos as an outsider seeking to understand its complexities. His years of involvement in the state’s administration, including his service as Commissioner for Science and Technology and Commissioner for Works, as well as his two terms as Deputy Governor, have given him considerable exposure to the machinery of government and the demands of public administration.

His experience in the Works Ministry, in particular, places his understanding of infrastructure development, urban planning and the intricate relationship between mobility and economic productivity within the broader conversation about Lagos’s future.

But experience alone is not the destination. It must be translated into fresh ideas, measurable outcomes and responsive governance. This is where The Lagos Promise invites serious attention.

Its policy propositions address some of the most consequential issues confronting a modern megacity: human capital development, knowledge economy, infrastructure, transportation, healthcare, environmental sustainability, security, economic inclusion and energy.

The emphasis on a knowledge-driven economy is particularly timely. Lagos must remain ahead of the curve in a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, digital innovation, technology and new economic opportunities. Our young population must be equipped not merely to seek employment but to create businesses, develop solutions and compete confidently in the global marketplace.

Infrastructure and mobility also remain central to the Lagos conversation. The pressure of urbanisation, population growth and commercial activity demands continuous investment in roads, transportation networks, housing and public utilities. The next phase must build on existing achievements while addressing the gaps that still affect the daily experiences of residents.

Similarly, healthcare, environmental management, security and social protection must receive the attention they deserve. A truly prosperous Lagos must be one where economic growth translates into improved living standards, accessible public services and opportunities across social and economic divides.

One cannot overlook the importance of institutional continuity in this equation. Lagos has demonstrated that development is more sustainable when successive administrations recognise the value of existing investments, preserve functional institutions and improve upon established policies. Continuity should never mean complacency; rather, it should provide the platform for innovation, correction and accelerated progress.

This is the larger context in which Hamzat’s manifesto should be appreciated. The task is not simply to maintain the Lagos of yesterday but to prepare the Lagos of tomorrow. A Lagos that is more competitive, more inclusive, more technologically advanced, more environmentally sustainable and better positioned to take advantage of emerging global opportunities.

There is also a responsibility to ensure that the promises contained in the manifesto are translated into practical programmes, clear implementation frameworks, realistic timelines and measurable deliverables. Citizens have every right to demand accountability, transparency and tangible results from those entrusted with public office.

So, why is Lagos so blessed?

It is blessed by geography, enriched by culture, energised by enterprise and strengthened by a people whose determination has consistently overcome challenges. Above all, its development story has benefited from successive generations of leadership that have contributed to its growth and transformation.

Now, with The Lagos Promise setting out a proposed direction for the next chapter, the Hamzat years beckon with an agenda that deserves close public scrutiny and constructive engagement.

The Lagos of our dreams cannot be built by nostalgia or rhetoric. It requires vision, experience, innovation, continuity and the courage to confront new challenges.

Lagos is blessed with a glorious past, an extraordinary present and the opportunity of an even more promising future. The Hamzat years represent the next chapter in that continuing journey.
