Afrobeats singer Adekunle Gold has said genotype compatibility determined his decision to marry fellow artiste Simi.
The singer disclosed this on a recent episode of the One54 Podcast. He said he acted on the decision because he lives with sickle cell disease and wanted healthy children.
Adekunle Gold stated that he asked about Simi’s genotype immediately after they met. He said he would not have continued the relationship if she was SS.
“When me and my wife first met, the first thing I did was to know her genotype. She is AA. That was why I proceeded with the relationship,” he said.
“I wouldn’t have married my wife if she were SS. Forget love. I don’t think it makes sense to bring a child into this world and they would be sickly,” he added.
Adekunle Gold and Simi married in January 2019. They have two children.
Since revealing his SS status, the singer has campaigned for sickle cell awareness in Nigeria and urged couples to conduct genotype tests before marriage.
