The crisis rocking the main opposition political party in Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) took a new dimension on Friday as the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), led by acting National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, inaugurated a new Board of Trustees (BoT), appointing Senator Mao Ohabunwa as its Chairman.
Ohabunwawas elected during a ceremony in Abuja, while Isah Dansidi was named the board’s Secretary.

Speaking at the inauguration, Mohammed said the decision to constitute a new board was part of ongoing efforts to restore the party’s founding values and rebuild public confidence.
“We have come together not merely to inaugurate a new Board of Trustees but to renew our faith in the ideals that gave birth to this great political family — justice, fairness, inclusivity, and respect for the rule of law,” he said.

According to Mohamma, internal disputes and leadership crises had derailed the PDP from its founding principles. He accused the former BoT, led by Senator Adolphus Wabara, of losing its moral compass, adding that Wabara’s suspension by the Abia State chapter of the PDP was “a difficult but necessary step.”
“We must be honest with ourselves — the decay we are correcting today did not start yesterday. It began when we abandoned the principle of zoning before the 2015 elections, when ambition overrode equity, and when we ignored the cries of reason within our ranks. The consequences of those decisions still haunt us today,” he said.
While reaffirming his commitment to internal reform, Mohammed vowed that the new leadership would prioritize transparency, fairness, and respect for due process.
“Under this leadership, the PDP will never again be held hostage by impunity, manipulation, or disregard for its constitution. We will rebuild this party with transparency, respect court judgments, and conduct our congresses with fairness and integrity. Our goal is to restore public trust and reclaim the PDP’s position as the moral voice of Nigeria’s democracy,” he stated.
