The Nigerian Army on Friday, 21 November, 2025 denied claim in a viral publication that the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu was planning to forcefully recruit Nigerians aged 18 and above into military service.
The Acting Director, Public Relations, Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele, who made the denial through a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, explained that the viral post had alleged that the COAS threatened compulsory conscription for youths who fail to voluntarily enlist.

The post further claimed that 10,000 soldiers recruited last year had gone missing.
But the Army spokesperson said the claims was “malicious fabrication” deliberately crafted to mislead the public and incite fear.”
According to Anele, the allegations were entirely unfounded, adding that the COAS never made such remarks at any time or in any forum.
She warned individuals and groups circulating false and inciting information to desist, saying those found culpable would be tracked, apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Anele also urged the public to disregard the rumour and rely only on verified official communication channels and social media accounts for credible information.
