The Lagos State Ferry Service (LAGFERRY) have informed residents of Shomolu-Bariga axis that they stand to enjoy 50% reduction in ferry fares when they use the cowry card for payment.

The management of the Ferry Services disclosed this on Tuesday, 12 December, 2023 during a stakeholders’ engagement organized to sensitize commuters in Shomolu-Bariga axis which took place at the Ilaje Bariga Waterfront Jetty.

The cowry card, which can also be used for buses, trains, and water transportation, offers a convenient and cost-effective way to travel across Lagos. By utilizing the cowry card, residents can significantly reduce their daily transportation expenses.

Fadekemi Emmanuel, representative of Seun Osiyemi, state Commission for Transportation, commended the efforts of Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu in revolutionizing the Lagos State Ferry Services since coming on board in 2019.

“With a total of 17 boats provided by the government in the past four years, the transportation system has been equipped and energized,” the Commissioner said.

During the commissioning of the Bariga Terminal, there were initial challenges in seeing it fully operational for the benefit of the community. The Commissioner thus emphasized the importance of community engagement and urged the residents to take ownership of this establishment. “The terminal was constructed with the people in mind, and it is essential for them to utilize and care for it,” he said.

Hon. Abdoulbaq Ladi Balogun, MD/CEO of LAGFERRY, expressed his enthusiasm for this initiative, stating, “We want to make transportation more affordable and accessible for the residents of Shomolu-Bariga. With the cowry card, they can enjoy seamless travel experiences while saving money.”

Balogun explained to the stakeholders that this offer comes as part of LAGFERRY’s commitment to enhancing the transportation system in Lagos and as part of the THEMES agenda of Governor Sanwo-Olu.

“With 45 identified water transportation routes, 15 priority routes, 7 terminals, and 43 jetties, LAGFERRY aims to provide residents with convenient and efficient travel options,” he said.

Furthermore, Balogun said to celebrate this exciting development, LAGFERRY is organizing a special event called “Sail the Love Lagos Experience” on Saturday, 16 December, and Saturday, 17 December, 2023. Participants can join in the fun-filled activities by purchasing a ticket for just N5000. Departing from Bariga Waterfront, the event promises an unforgettable experience at Takwa Bay Island beach.

Engr. Nelson, representative of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), called on residents to prioritize the use of Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY).

Nelson commended the efforts of the Lagos State Government in developing and improving the water transportation system. She stated the numerous benefits of LAGFERRY, including its convenience, efficiency, and ability to alleviate traffic congestion on the roads.

Ibrahim Famuyiwa, representative of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), praised the Governor of Lagos for his tireless efforts in advancing the transportation sector. Significant progress has been made, including the establishment of jetties, buses, and other transportation infrastructure.Furthermore, Famuyiwa implores residents to consider utilizing water transportation as it offers a fast and easy alternative. By taking advantage of the water transport system, commuters can bypass traffic and enjoy a smooth journey across the city.
