Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has cleared N2 billion gratuity backlog owed to 1,814 retired primary school teachers who served under the Borno State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) between 2007 and 2016.

The Executive Chairman of Borno State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof Bulama Kagu, said the payment underscores the governor’s commitment to settling all outstanding pensions and gratuities owed to retired civil servants.

“Today, 1,814 retired teachers across Borno’s 27 local government areas will finally smile home with their entitlements,” Kagu said.

Last January, Zulum bapproved the sum of  N8 billion to settle outstanding pension and gratuity payments for retired primary school teachers and other civil servants who have worked with the state government.

The Governor, in his commitment to addressing pension issues, had previously disbursed N3 billion in June and September 2019 to pay the gratuities of 1,684 retirees who had left the civil service between 2013 and 2019.

Additionally, in 2020, over N12 billion was allocated to settle the gratuities for retirees who left both the state and local government service between 2013 and 2017.

Till date, Zulum has paid around N25 billion towards the settlement of gratuities for local and state government retirees.
