A coalition of Islamic groups as well as the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN)in Bauchi State have strongly rejected allegations linking the state Governor, Senator Bala Abdukadir Mohammed and his administration to terrorism and banditry financing.

The two groups in separate press conferences over the weekend described the claims as baseless, misleading, and dangerous to the peace of the state.
At a press briefing held at the Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Bauchi, Islamic scholars from different sects came together to defend the governor.

Speaking on behalf of the coalition, Imam Muhammad Yusuf Adam emphasized that Bauchi remains one of the most peaceful states in Northern Nigeria.
He noted that the state has become a safe haven for people fleeing insecurity in neighboring regions. “If terrorism and banditry were widespread here, people would not be moving into Bauchi in such large numbers,” he argued.
The coalition insisted that no town or forest in Bauchi serves as a hideout for terrorists or bandits. They stressed that no individual has ever been arrested in the state with weapons or supplies meant for such groups.
Quoting the Qur’an, Imam Yusuf reminded the public: “When you speak, speak the truth” (Surah 6, Verse 154).
The coalition highlighted Governor Bala Mohammed’s active role in combating insecurity, pointing to his support for security agencies and vigilante groups. They recalled his swift response during bandit incursions in Duguri, Alkaleri Local Government Area, and his directive to Imams and scholars to intensify prayers for peace.
They also clarified that individuals recently linked to the allegations, such as Bello Badejo, were only involved in legitimate security cooperation, not criminal activities.
Beyond defending the Governor, the coalition demanded the immediate release of Bauchi government officials currently detained in Abuja, including the state Commissioner of Finance.
They described the allegations against them as unfounded, stressing that these officials are known for good character and peaceful living.
“Our people are shocked. None of them has ever been associated with banditry. They should be allowed to return to their families and continue their duties,” the coalition declared.
The coalition cautioned politicians against exploiting security issues for rivalry, warning that such actions could destabilize the state.
“Conflict is like a forest fire: once it starts, it does not burn only those who ignited it,” they said.
In conclusion, the coalition insisted that Bauchi residents are best positioned to judge their governor’s conduct, not outsiders. They prayed for Allah’s continued peace in the state and protection for those currently in custody.
In a related development, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Bauchi State chapter expressed surprise and concern over allegations of terrorism financing against the state Governor, Senator Bala Abdukadir Mohammed.
As contained in a statement jointly signed by the CAN Chairman, Rev Dr. Abraham Damina Dimeus and Secretary, Rev Matthew Wakili Laslimbo, which was made available to Journalists yesterday, the CAN called for caution in the ongoing prosecution of the state Finance Commissioner by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).
CAN described the claims as “baseless, malicious, and an affront to truth”, citing the Governor’s commitment to inter-faith harmony, peace, and security in Bauchi State.
The Chairman and the Secretary highlighted Governor Mohammed’s support for Christian institutions and events, and his efforts to promote unity and development.
The further described the allegations as politically motivated and an attempt to tarnish the Governor’s image.
They reaffirmed their trust in his leadership and urge the public to disregard the false claims.
“Ordinarily and as a religious body, that has no affiliation with politics or political activities, we would have kept quiet and watch as things go by. But, as citizens of Nigeria and residents of Bauchi State, it is our responsibility to state what we know and sure of,” the statement disclosed.
According to CAN, “In as much as we are not challenging any authority over its functions and responsibilities, we are of the opinion that caution needs to be applied in situations in order not to make matters worse.”
CAN then urged the public to disregard the false claims and stand with Governor Bala Mohammed as he continues to serve Bauchi State with dedication.
