The Bauchi State Police Command on Monday, 3 March, 2024 disclosed that the death toll from Sunday’s tragic stampede at an alms-giving event in the state has risen to seven.

Initially, four people were reported dead after being trapped while attempting to receive alms at Shafa Holdings Company Plc on Jos Road, Bauchi.

However, the Bauchi State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Ahmed Wakil, later confirmed that three more women had succumbed to their injuries.

The incident occurred around 10:20 a.m. during the company’s annual Zakat (almsgiving) exercise meant to assist the less privileged.

Two of the additional victims died at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), while the third passed away at home after being taken away by her family.

According to a witness, several others, including women and children, were injured in the chaotic rush.
SP Wakil assured that more details would be provided as investigations continue.
