The Rivers State House of Assembly said that the Chief Judge of the state has already received and acknowledged letters relating to the impeachment process, countering claims that the required constitutional steps has not been followed.

In a statement issued on Friday, 16 January, 2026 evening, the chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Enemi George, disclosed that the correspondence forwarded to the Chief Judge, including all relevant documents and notices of allegations of gross misconduct, had been duly delivered and acknowledged.
George explained that the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly acted in line with constitutional provisions by formally notifying the Chief Judge of the allegations. According to him, the process was carried out in strict compliance with the law.

“It is important to inform the good people of Rivers State that Mr Speaker has already complied with the constitution, and letters sent by him to the Chief Judge have been received and acknowledged,” the statement read.
He further clarified that “all relevant documents, including the Notices of Allegations of Gross Misconduct, were attached,” stressing that there was no omission in the materials transmitted to the Chief Judge.
Addressing the next stages of the process, George noted that all subsequent actions in the impeachment procedure are clearly provided for under Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution.
He urged residents of Rivers State to remain calm and not to be swayed by what he described as attempts by some individuals to derail democratic processes.
The lawmaker cautioned against misinformation, warning that “those who want to truncate our democracy” should not be allowed to mislead the public regarding the actions of the legislature.
George maintained that the House of Assembly has acted strictly within the bounds of the constitution throughout the process.
He also expressed appreciation to the people of Rivers State for their continued support and prayers, assuring them that the assembly remains committed to upholding democratic principles and the rule of law.
