Persons with disabilities in Ondo are currently in happy mood as the Ekiti State Government has provided for them vocational training, tools to make them self –reliance.

The state government reaffirmed its commitment to empowering persons with disabilities through vocational training and essential support, fostering self-reliance and economic independence.

The Chairman of the Office of Disability Affairs, Dr Ebenezer Ogunlade, praised Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s inclusive policies and encouraged PWDs to pursue their aspirations with determination.

“Pursue your dreams with confidence and determination. You can achieve whatever you set your mind to,” Ogunlade declared during the graduation and empowerment ceremony held at the Skill Acquisition Centre in Ilokun, Ado-Ekiti.

The event celebrated 40 PWDs who completed training in five key fields: shoemaking, ICT, cosmetology and hairdressing, catering and hospitality, and tailoring and fashion design.

The graduates were provided with tools and equipment to kickstart their careers, which Ogunlade described as a testament to the government’s commitment to inclusivity and skill development.

He further urged the graduates to focus on their abilities, saying, “Do not dwell on societal perceptions. Each of you has the potential to excel in your chosen career.”

Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Education and Social Inclusion, Adetoun Agboola, announced a forthcoming financial assistance programme for PWDs, scheduled for January 2025.

Agboola commended Governor Oyebanji’s unwavering support, stating, “If anyone says Governor Oyebanji is not doing anything for PWDs, do not believe them. His work speaks for itself, and he remains dedicated to empowering the PWD community.”

She encouraged the graduates to utilise their tools effectively, adding, “Make good use of the equipment you have received today and apply the knowledge gained during your training.”

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Peju Babafemi, highlighted the collaboration between ministries and disability-focused offices, which has yielded significant results for all disability clusters.

She urged beneficiaries to seize the opportunities presented to them, ensuring long-term impact.

Chairman of Ado Central Local Council Development Area, Toyin Ojo, expressed plans to replicate similar initiatives in his constituency, inspired by the governor’s commitment to PWD empowerment.

Graduates, such as ICT trainee Mr Ife Abejide, who received a laptop, and Mrs Ruth Fasoranti, who was provided with catering tools, expressed gratitude.

They acknowledged the transformative nature of the programme and were confident the equipment would enhance their businesses and crafts.
