The Federal Government has reaffirmed its determination to end insecurity in Nigeria, unveiling renewed strategies centred on proactive operations, long-term planning and stronger collaboration with state governments.
The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, stated this on Monday, 31 August, 2026 in Kano during a condolence and assessment visit to the Kano State Government House following the Saturday, 29
August, 2026, bandit attack on Chiroma Village in Garun Mallam Local Government Area.
Matawalle said President Bola Tinubu had constituted a committee to develop a five-year Defence and Security Plan to provide a long-term framework for tackling security threats across the country.
“The President has constituted a committee to develop a 5-year Defence and Security Plan. This will guide our long-term approach to tackling security threats across the country,” he said.
He disclosed that the Commander, 3 Brigade, Kano, Brigadier General Jimoh, had led a joint rescue operation with personnel of the Joint Task Force from the Hawan-Kwano and Kwanar Dangora camps following the attack.
According to him, the operation resulted in the rescue of kidnapped victims around Yan-Kifi Bridge and Marabar Kwari areas of Garun Mallam.
The Minister commended the troops for their prompt response and courage, assuring Kano residents that the Federal Government would continue to strengthen the operational capacity of the Armed Forces and other security agencies.
“We will continue doing everything possible to support our security services to ensure our country is safe. I assure you that soon, insecurity will be a thing of the past, and we will all live in peace and prosperity,” Matawalle said.
He stressed that defeating insecurity required coordinated efforts among the federal, state and local governments, as well as timely and credible information from residents.
“It takes the combined effort of local government, state and federal levels to tackle this issue of insecurity. We also need timely and credible information from citizens to security agencies,” he said.
Matawalle further assured Kano State of increased Federal Government support, including the deployment of additional fighting vehicles, weapons and other operational equipment to strengthen security operations in the state.
Before his visit to the Government House, the minister held a closed-door security meeting with commanders of 3 Brigade and other formations in Kano, charging them to sustain the momentum of ongoing operations and intensify efforts to secure communities.
He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to providing the resources and support required to protect lives and property and safeguard the territorial integrity of the country.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who received the minister, thanked him for the visit and pledged Kano State’s continued cooperation with the Federal Government in tackling insecurity.
“We are confident in your leadership. At the state level, we will continue to do what needs to be done to ensure security and stability in Kano,” Yusuf said.
The governor added that the state would support President Tinubu’s commitment to addressing insecurity and ensure that the menace did not persist in Kano.
