Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu,  on Saturday, 7 November, 2026 cheered the country’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, during their final match against Japan at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

In a video shared on social media on Saturday, the First Lady was seen watching the match from her residence, cheering the players and applauding their performance.

She was also heard chanting, “Nigeria! Nigeria!” as the team battled Japan for the trophy.

The  Flamingos defeated Japan 2-1 on Saturday, 7 November, 2026 to win the tournament, becoming the first African nation to lift the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Goals from Awawu Bashiru in the 39th minute and Oluebube Umejiaku in the 47th minute secured the victory for Nigeria at the Mohammed VI Football Complex.

Japan pulled one back through Fuki Ito in the 80th minute, but the Flamingos held on to secure the historic win.

The triumph also made Nigeria the first African country to win the FIFA U-17 World Cup in both the men’s and women’s categories.

The Flamingos further became the first team in the competition’s history to lose their opening match and still go on to win the title, having recovered from a 2-1 group-stage defeat to Poland.
