First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerians to collectively strengthen the nation’s democracy and ensure it serves the interests of all citizens.
She made the call in a message issued to mark the International Day of Democracy, commemorated on Tuesday, 15 September, under the theme “Bring Human Rights into Focus.”
She said the theme served as a reminder that democracy thrives only when the rights, dignity and freedoms of every citizen are respected and protected.
Reflecting on the nation’s democratic journey, Tinubu noted that Nigeria, 65 years after independence and following over 25 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, had recorded significant progress, citing stronger institutions, peaceful transitions of power and greater citizen participation in governance as key milestones.
She urged Nigerians to sustain the collective effort towards deepening democratic values, stressing that such commitment remained vital to building a more peaceful and prosperous nation.
“Let us collectively continue to work together to strengthen our democracy, ensure that it serves the interests of all Nigerians, and build a more peaceful and prosperous nation,” she said.
The First Lady rounded off her message with felicitations to Nigerians on the occasion.
“Happy International Day of Democracy 2026!” she said.
