A 48-year-old Kenyan woman, Irene Wanjiru Mbugua, a caregiver, was attacked and killed by a male patient whom she was caring for in the United Kingdom.

Mbugua was found dead in a residence on Markby Road, Winson Green, Birmingham, at approximately 1 a.m. on Monday, 23 June, 2025.

The mother of four, who hailed from Mataara in Gatundu North, Kiambu, Kenyan, worked in the UK for two years. She was employed by a caregiving agency.

Her violent death has sent shockwaves through her family and the African caregiving community, as she was a devoted mother and a respected professional.

Speaking to journalists, her brother Gilbert Mbuga said his sister was clobbered to death by a mentally ill patient whom she was caring for in Birmingham.

“Police said she had been clobbered on the head with a blunt object and a postmortem report showed she died of blunt force trauma,” her brother Gilbert Mbugua said.

“Mbugua’s death was a sad affair since her two young twin sons had arrived in the UK from Kenya a week before, and she had been looking forward to reconnecting with them in her house at Nottingham where her oldest son lives,” he added.

“She missed filing the mandatory daily work report,” he said.

It was after both the family and the agency failed to reach her that the West Midlands Police were involved and discovered her body in the house where she worked on three-week residential shifts.

A man in his thirties has been arrested and is currently in custody on suspicion of murder.

The police have confirmed they are not searching for anyone else in connection with the incident.
