The Lagos State Government says it is strengthening project monitoring and legislative oversight to improve infrastructure delivery, accelerate budget implementation and support its long-term economic growth strategy.
Speaking after the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget’s 2026 Monitoring and Evaluation Stakeholders’ Forum, the state Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Ope George, said the state had adopted a monitoring framework that tracks projects from planning through execution to completion, in a move it says is helping to ensure major projects are completed on schedule while improving accountability in the use of public funds.
George explained that the approach was designed to identify implementation challenges early and prevent delays, noting that the process begins with consultations involving residents across Lagos, whose priorities are incorporated into the annual budget before implementation starts.
According to him, monitoring teams subsequently visit project sites alongside relevant ministries and agencies to verify completed work, assess progress against approved timelines and determine whether contractors have met agreed performance milestones before payments are processed.
He said the administration had made accountability a key component of infrastructure delivery, stressing that all projects financed with public funds are subjected to continuous monitoring regardless of their size or location.
He identified the Lagos Rail Mass Transit, Opebi-Ojota Link Bridge, Lagos Food Logistics Hub and Massey Children’s Hospital as some of the state’s major infrastructure projects, while noting that investments in schools, health centres and neighbourhood infrastructure remain equally important because of their direct impact on residents.
The Commissioner added that the introduction of the LSDP 2052 Tracking Dashboard would strengthen data-driven governance by providing real-time information to monitor project implementation, evaluate institutional performance and improve policy execution.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Economic Planning and Budget, Lukman Sa’ad Olumoh, said legislative oversight had become an important tool for ensuring projects are completed efficiently and within approved budget provisions.
According to him, lawmakers regularly review implementation reports, engage relevant agencies and monitor project execution to ensure government programmes achieve their intended objectives.
Olumoh said digital technology had improved project monitoring by making the process more transparent, efficient and reliable, adding that collaboration between Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration and the House of Assembly had strengthened fiscal discipline and improved project implementation across the state.
He said the partnership had supported the expansion of the state’s development budget while ensuring that infrastructure investments are backed by legislative oversight and accountability.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, Olayinka Ojo, said public participation remained central to the state’s planning process, explaining that budget consultations enable residents to contribute to government priorities, while continuous monitoring during implementation helps ensure approved projects are delivered as planned.
Ojo added that field inspections conducted before contractor payments are approved have become an important safeguard for quality assurance, transparency and the timely completion of projects benefiting Lagos residents.
