The Lagos State Government on Tuesday, 3 December, 2024, paid over ₦1.5 billion as compensation to over 150 beneficiaries whose properties were acquired by the State Government for public interest.
The beneficiaries, which include organisations, individuals, landlords, and tenants, were given compensation during Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s public presentation of cheques.
Compensations were paid to those affected by the construction of Pen Cinema, Agege Right of Way; LAMATA Bus Terminal, Abule Egba; LAMATA Right of Way in Oja Oba, Abule Egba; LAMATA Corridor, Maryland; Road Expansion in Orile-Badagry; Katanguwa; Orile-Badagry Road Expansion and Oyingbo Ultra Modern Bus Terminal by the Lagos State Government.
Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Sanwo-Olu said that the payment of the compensations fulfilled the promise of fair compensation to citizens whose lands were acquired for the development of the state.
The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustainable growth and inclusivity, adding that his government will continue to ensure the dividends of progress reach every corner of the State.
He said: “Today marks more than just the disbursement of compensation; it is a powerful testament to the partnership between citizens and government—a partnership that shapes a future of shared prosperity. By honouring this commitment, we reaffirm our unwavering dedication to building a Lagos that serves and uplifts all its people.
“This occasion represents more than compensation—it symbolises our commitment to transforming Lagos State’s socio-economic landscape. The lands we acquire are not just properties but vital resources for establishing critical infrastructure, fostering sustainable growth, and ensuring every resident of Lagos benefits from equitable development. From hospitals to schools, housing to roads, these lands become the foundation upon which we build a brighter future.
“By prioritising essential infrastructure and community-focused projects, we are improving access to services, enhancing connectivity, and laying the groundwork for a resilient and thriving Lagos.
“Over the past few years, our administration has taken bold strides to translate these acquired lands into impactful initiatives. From constructing healthcare facilities that provide life-saving services to schools that nurture young minds and transportation systems that connect communities, each project reflects our vision of inclusive growth.”
Speaking on the positive effects of the projects built on the acquired land, Governor Sanwo-Olu said: “Our ongoing hospital projects promise to deliver timely, quality healthcare to thousands annually, while our transportation expansion initiatives are driving efficiency and boosting productivity across the State.
“Our affordable housing schemes offer security and dignity to countless families, while our public safety infrastructure ensures residents feel safe in their communities. These efforts go beyond meeting immediate needs—they create the foundation for a future where every Lagosian can thrive.”
Commending the beneficiaries, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the Lagos State Government acknowledged sacrifices and contributions to the development of the State. “Your cooperation and understanding have been invaluable, and this compensation is a symbol of our respect and appreciation. We hope these funds empower you to explore new opportunities and enrich your lives.
“To all Lagosians who have contributed to the success of our public projects, we extend our heartfelt gratitude. Your support and resilience inspire our determination to continue building a state that prioritises the welfare and development of its people,” he said.
Speaking during the event, the Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Land Bureau, Mr. Kamar Olowoshago, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu and the landowners for the mutually beneficial partnership.
He said: “This event reflects our commitment to ensuring that those who have contributed to the State’s growth through their lands are duly recognised and rewarded.
“As we know, land is one of our most precious assets, and it plays a pivotal role in realising our ambitious development agenda. This agenda includes projects that not only meet immediate community needs but also enhance long-term opportunities for sustainable growth, connectivity, and economic prosperity.
“We hope that the funds you receive today will empower you and secure a future filled with opportunities and progress for you and your families. This gesture is not just about compensation; it is a reaffirmation of the Lagos State Government’s commitment to supporting its citizens and ensuring that our urban and infrastructural development projects contribute meaningfully to the lives of all Lagosians.”
Commenting on the Lagos State Government gesture, one of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Tinuola Adeshagba-Alegbe from Oja-Oba, said that the government did well to compensate landowners affected by the acquisition. “I wasn’t expecting any compensation. My father had three shops; my siblings are here too, and we are grateful,” she said.
