The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has unveiled a strategic partnership with Abbey Rangers Football Club, a respected UK community football institution, in a move set to redefine grassroots football development in Lagos, reports thegazellenews.com
The collaboration the first of its kind between a Nigerian state and a UK community club establishes a comprehensive seven-pillar framework covering talent development, coaching capacity, sports science, community engagement, policy advisory, resource mobilisation and infrastructure optimisation.

Under the initiative, the partners will run state-wide scouting programmes in schools and communities to identify promising talent and offer technical training, scholarships and holistic athlete support.
An athlete mentorship scheme will pair professional coaches and players with emerging athletes to provide guidance on discipline, skill growth and career navigation. The partnership also prioritises human capacity development for coaches and administrators through accredited certification courses, workshops and international exchange opportunities.

Speaking at the unveiling, LSSC Director General Mr. Lekan Fatodu described the alliance as a major step in Lagos’ mission to build a sustainable, inclusive sports ecosystem and thanked Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his leadership and investment in sports as a driver of youth development and economic progress.
Abbey Rangers Chairman, Mr. Nick Riley said the partnership will bridge cultures and extend the club’s community model of development to Lagos, helping to raise coaching standards and expand opportunities for young players.
By combining global best practices with local implementation, the Lagos State–Abbey Rangers partnership aims to create lasting impact — delivering improved facilities, better coaching, data-driven performance support and clear career pathways so every young person in Lagos has access to quality football development regardless of background.
