A 27-year-old man named Abbas Ibrahim, has been arrested by the operatives of the Jigawa State Police Command for allegedly setting ablaze his elder brother, Basiru Shuaibu, and his wife, in Gwaram Local Government Area of the state, reports thegazellenews.com.
It was gathered that the sad incident occurred on September 29, 2026, at about 11:30pm at Nassarawa village, Gwaram LGA.
The Jigawa State Police Command Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, made this disclosure through a statement on Wednesday, 7 October, 2026.
According to Adam, the suspect, who claimed to be of unsound mind, allegedly jumped into his elder brother’s residence, poured petrol inside his room and set it ablaze, and as a result of this, the fire left Basiru and his wife with serious burns.
The victims were subsequently taken by relatives to a traditional medicine practitioner for treatment. However, Basiru later died from injuries sustained in the incident.
Following the incident, according to the state police image-maker, police operatives launched an investigation and arrested Abbas in Sara town, Gwaram LGA.
Adam, who said the case was subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Dutse, for further investigation, added that suspect has since been arraigned in court for prosecution.
The state Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, according to the statement, urged residents to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
Murtatala also advised members of the public to promptly report suspicious activities, threats and disputes to the police or other relevant security agenciess.
