The Interfaith Youth Council of Nigeria (IYCN), has called upon all relevant investigative authorities to conduct a thorough, professional, independent, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of late Nurse Mary Habila.
The Council which made the call in a Press statement signed and issued to Journalists on Sunday, 19 July, 2026, by Comrade Moses S. Moses, the leader of the Interfaith Youth Council of Nigeria, said while public concern over Habila’s death and the demand for justice were understandable, it was important to distinguish between verified facts, allegations and personal opinions.
According to the council, criminal responsibility can only be established through a credible investigation and judicial process, not through public sentiment or speculation.
“As a national interfaith organisation committed to promoting peaceful coexistence, justice, national unity, responsible citizenship, religious harmony and respect for the rule of law, we believe moments of national grief should unite rather than divide us,” the statement read.
The council urged investigative authorities to conduct a professional, impartial and evidence-based investigation without fear, favour, political interference or undue influence.
It stressed that anyone found culpable after due legal process should be held accountable, regardless of status or position.
The statement also referenced a report from the Federal Ministry of Works, which indicated that the late Mary Habila served in the household of the Minister of Works for about three years before her death.
According to the report, she maintained a cordial and professional relationship with the minister throughout her service and was widely regarded as a diligent and committed healthcare professional.
The report further stated that she was treated like other members of staff, with no record of hostility or discriminatory treatment during her employment.
However, the IYCN emphasised that the information contained in the report should not influence or prejudice the ongoing investigation.
“While these representations provide useful background to her employment history, they neither determine nor prejudice the outcome of the ongoing investigation, which should proceed independently, impartially and in accordance with the law,” Moses said.
The council further appealed to public officials, political leaders, civil society organisations, faith-based groups, youth organisations, media practitioners and members of the public to exercise restraint in their comments on the case.
It warned that premature conclusions and inflammatory rhetoric could undermine public confidence in the justice system and interfere with ongoing investigations.
The IYCN maintained that justice and due process are inseparable, insisting that the pursuit of justice must always be guided by fairness, impartiality and the Constitution.
The council also urged Nigerians to remain peaceful, discourage the spread of misinformation and support institutions responsible for ensuring justice.
It extended its condolences to the family of Mary Habila, praying that God grants them the strength to bear the loss.
“Our thoughts remain with the family of Mary Habila. We pray that the truth is established through a credible process, that justice is served in accordance with the law, and that this tragic incident ultimately strengthens public confidence in Nigeria’s institutions and commitment to equal justice under the law,” the statement added.
