Six northern states cannot survive without monthly federal allocations, a report has revealed. The states are Katsina, the home state of President Muhammadu Buhari; Borno; Gombe; Taraba; Kebbi, and Yobe.
According to PR Nigeria, the six states generate the lowest internal revenues among states of the federation, and depend majorly on monthly distributable funds from crude oil sale and other federal revenue sources.
Katsina is reputed to have the lowest internally generated revenue (IGR) of N8 billion in 2019, compared to N136 billion it received in federal allocation for the same year. The others, namely Kebbi realized N7.3 billion in 2019 and received N100 billion in federal allocation; Borno raked in N8 billion IGR, but allocated N121 billion from the federal purse.
Equally, Taraba, with IGR of N6.5 billion, got N86 billion in federal allocation, while Yobe, and Gombe realised N8.4 billion and N6.8 billion IGRs while receiving N88 billion and N75 billion federal monetary sharing respectively.
Among the southern states of Nigeria, Bayelsa has the lowest IGR of N16 billion while it received from the federation account N176 billion in 2019. In the same year, the southeastern states of Anambra and Enugu realized N26 billion and N31 billion while they received N98 billion and N103 billion respectively. In addition, Edo realized N29 billion and received N108 billion from federation account in 2019. Others are Cross River with N22 billion IGR as against N99 billion it received in 2019; Ondo with N30 billion IGR, received N103 billion.
Meanwhile, Lagos State maintained impressive lead with N398 billion IGR, against N270 billion federal allocation during the same period; Ogun State N70.92 billion (IGR) and got N92 billion; Rivers has N140 billion IGR against N219 billion; Kwara made N30 billion and received N80 billion in federal allocation for 2019.
Moreover, the 36 states raked N1.3 trillion in 2019 as IGR, which was N200 billion more than N1.1 trillion for 2018.
